Damian Iorio



Damian Iorio regularly guest conducts with orchestras such as such as the London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Estonian National Symphony, St Petersburg Philharmonic, Trondheim Symphony and Iceland Symphony Orchestras.

Current highlights this season include his debut with the Het Gelders Orkest, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and the Prague Philharmonia. He will also conduct performances of La Boheme in Italy and will return to the Verdi Orchestra in Milan.

Iorio's work on the international opera scene includes his recent debut at Central City Opera, Denver with Britten The Rape of Lucretia, which garnered much praise in the international press. In June 2007 he made his debut at Glyndebourne Festival Opera with performances of Verdi Macbeth, where he worked alongside Vladimir Jurowski. In the 2008/9 season he worked alongside Jiri Belohalvek, when he conducted Smetana The Bartered Bride at the Opera de Paris, and conducted a new production of Verdi Macbeth at the National Theatre Brno. Iorio has also conducted successful new productions in Italy of Britten's Curlew River and Albert Herring (Accademia della Scala, Milan, and Maggio Musicale, Florence).

Among the international festivals that he has appeared in are the Esterhazy Haydn Festival, Bratislava Festival, Musical Olympus Festival in St Petersburg and Tivoli Festival in Copenhagen.

From 1999 to 2005, Iorio was Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Murmansk, with whom he has toured Russia and Scandinavia. Iorio's work in Russia also includes Britten The Turn of the Screw in St Petersburg, and the Russian premiere, in Moscow, of Michael Nyman's opera The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, which was nominated for Best Opera Production at the 2004 Golden Mask Festival.

Born in London, in a family of Italian and English musicians, Damian studied conducting with Alexander Polishchuk and Ilya Musin in St Petersburg after completing violin studies with Yossi Zivoni in the UK and Franco Gulli in the USA.

In 2006 Damian was bestowed the title Knight of the Order of Sant'Agata, Republic of San Marino, in recognition of his services to music in that state.
