The Times - 6/7/99 (Leeds Competition, Final Concert)
The score he had to tackle was Elgar's Enigma Variations, to which he applied
much sensitivity in phrasing and colouring to the more poetic passages.
The Murmansk News (Russia) - 5/1/00
It is not often that you see such inspired conducting, with such engagement
and insight into the music. He is without doubt a musician with a capital "M",
and has a pair of hands that are capable of expressing everything that he wants
to say... it is a long time since I have seen a conductor of such calibre.
Moscow Gudok (Russia) - 10/10/00 (Oxford Orchestra da Camera tour of Europe and Russia)
The concert of the Oxford Orchestra da Camera at the Small Hall of the Moscow
Conservatory completely justified the expectations of Russian public. The English
orchestra played magnificently... It was especially a great pleasure to hear
their performance of Handel and Haydn. These pieces, in my opinion, sounded
faultless... In many respects it was due to the merits of the charming young
conductor, Damian Iorio. It is interesting to note that he began his musical
career as a violinist, and his excellent knowledge of an orchestra "from
inside" was undoubtedly felt.
In all, this venture is an exciting breath of fresh air... especially when one
considers that the program's conductor and artistic director, Damian Iorio,
is not yet 30 years old.
Kommersant (Russia) - Turn of the Screw 5/12/01
Conductor Damian Iorio managed to achieve very rhythmically exact playing in just a few
rehearsals with the orchestra...
The sound of the sextet left such an impression
of organic and artistic power that one does not meet so often...
